Big Boy Bed

*Sniff*
Roman will be 2 on December 22nd. We wanted to get him a big boy bed, and Gianni insisted that it be a race car bed. I looked on Craigslist and found a good deal. So, we got it and put it together tonight. Roman was very excited by his bed. He loves climbing in and out. Every now and then, he stops and looks at it and says, "Wow."
This thing is so big that it takes up most of his room, crowding out the glider that I used to rock Roman before bed. I guess we have graduated to snuggling in the bed!
I may be sad that my little guy is growing up, but I was so happy to take that crib apart! As Bud says in Bud Not Buddy, "when one door closes, another one opens." I have felt that way so many times when watching my kids reach milestones.

Okay, so at least I posted these before Christmas! Ava was a flower fairy named Rosie. She designed the costume herself. Roman was Baby Spock again. I accidentally ordered his first Baby Spock costume in size 2T-4T instead of 12 months. I never sent the too-big one back, so he got to be Baby Spock twice.

Being the wonderful mother that I am, we went to the Pumpkin Patch a few weeks ago. I am only now posting about it.
Anyway, Ava LOVES pumpkins, so we had to go to Don's Grass, which is right by our house. Ava loved running around the piles of pumpkins, while Roman loved looking at the many trucks and tractors parked in the parking lot. They both enjoyed the hay maze, but Ava was very excited to throw hay on all of us.
Gianni took the pictures, and he's going to be mad that I posted them without him first fixing them in Photoshop.

How is it already October? We've been having way too much fun this Fall, because the time is flying!
Ava continues to enjoy Second Grade, although she really needs to work on her spelling and handwriting. We are adjusting to the homework, which everyone knows I do not agree with. We just do everything on Monday afternoon, then she is free to play after school all week!
Roman hasn't changed all that much. He is starting to say words, or at least he tries to say them. He is still speaking in one syllables. That's okay. I'm happy that his favorite word is not "No!" He usually says "Mom". I think that is his favorite word. He continues to enjoy growling, to the point that he often sounds possessed. Roman had a 5-day fever a couple of weeks ago, but he seems fine now. He was a pretty good sport about being sick. He isn't eating all that well, but he is a good size and is generally healthy, so I'm not too worried.
Gianni is staying healthy, in spite of the Lottery introducing a new game this month. That's keeping him pretty busy!
I am still enjoying my class. They are a great bunch of kiddos.

First of all, I want to thank my hubby for taking his vacation during the first week of school. He was available to help out in every way I needed him. I wish he didn't have to go back to work!
Ava's first week back was great! She woke up on her own the first two days. The rest of the week she was in good spirits right from the beginning. I've had reports from her teacher that she is very well-behaved in class and works hard. She gives compliments to her classmates freely. What a sweetie! She is still bringing her imaginary horses everywhere we go, and I am often asked to tie one up or walk it to the car. She talks about them incessantly. Her teacher gamely plays along, thank goodness. Oh, and she finally lost one of her teeth at school on Wednesday. What a relief for her, since it was really bothering her.
Roman did very well at daycare. He was in a good mood all day, but when I picked him up, he would say, "ome" to go home. One day, he was there a really long time, but he was still a jolly little guy when I picked him up. I think he enjoys the other children and the routine (although I did keep a pretty good routine this summer for a change). Also, Gianni dressed him in a shirt and shorts most of the week, and we didn't have any reports of "penis problems." At home, he will hold himself if given the chance, but he only did it once at school at naptime. Thank goodness!
As for me, I am cautiously optimistic that this year will be a good one. The students are really sweet and respectful. The last two years' classes presented some challenges, so I am certainly ready for a break from some of that.
You may notice some redundancy between my blog and my Facebook page. This blog is a chronicle of happenings in our family and will be around for my kids to read in the future. Facebook, as you know, is not conducive to this purpose. However, I post more frequently on Facebook because I can say my piece with less effort there. Either way, I apologize if you don't appreciate reading the same information twice!

Well, if you think my posting is erratic when I'm not working, get ready! School starts on Monday, August 23rd. I will most likely be MIA unless something big happens!
For second grade, Ava will be in my good friend Jody's class, and I have high hopes that she will have a great year. Jody already loves Ava, and Ava already likes Jody. Fingers crossed!
Roman will be going back to daycare on the same day that Ava and I go back to school. I think he will enjoy getting to play with all of the "new" toys and be around the other children. Hopefully, he will start talking more with some same-age models around him.
We had a really, really nice summer. I am looking forward to work, but I truly enjoyed my summer routine with the kiddos. I am almost to the point where I think I could be a stay-at-home mom! If Gianni ever makes a certain yearly income, I will retire. He is actually okay with that. Of course, neither of us thinks this is going to happen anytime soon. Sigh.

If you are easily offended, you may want to skip this post.
Roman has become very, very interested in his penis. If he has on shorts or just a diaper, his hands are "down there." He has taken to pulling his penis out of the top of his diaper and walking around that way. It is actually pretty funny.
One day, he woke up from his nap. Ava went in ahead of me to play with him while he was still in his crib. Suddenly, I heard a scream and Ava came running to me. She said that Roman was peeing out of his crib. I went to see what was going on, and he had pulled his penis out of his diaper and peed on the floor.
Now I have to dress Roman in what I call "cock-blocker outfits." These are those one-piece rompers that snap at the bottom. He hasn't figured out how to unsnap them so that he can get to the goods. I'm worried about sending him to daycare, because we don't have an unlimited supply of those outfits! I would die if he walked around daycare all day with his hands down his pants.
Gianni assures me this is normal boy behavior, and we are not reprimanding him. I just make sure to dress him in his special clothes.
We have a picture that Ava took, by the way, but I think it would be inappropriate to post online. I will be happy to embarass Roman in the future with it, though.

Beach Fun!

During the last weekend of July, we took the kids to visit their Southeast Texas grandparents. My dad and I took Roman and Ava to the beach, since Ava has been begging since last summer to go back.
Roman LOVED it! He loved playing in the waves the most, I think, but he also enjoyed playing in the sand.
For the first time, Ava really enjoyed swimming instead of building sand castles.
A great time was had by all!

Visit with Mimi

We have returned from our whirlwind visit with Ava and Roman's Mimi (my mom). Gianni had to sit this one out due to work.
We were supposed to have spent 6 days in League City on a trip that included playtime with the cousins, art camp and beach visits. Unfortunately, my grandmother broke her hip and needed surgery. Instead of going to Houston, we headed to Brownwood.
Between hospital visits, Mimi made sure that we all had a good time. The highlight was the new water playland in Brownwood. The only drawback was that Mimi almost drowned (for real)! A lifeguard saved her life. I would post a picture of the place, but we didn't bring the camera, and I can't find any images online.
Ava loved the Lazy River and big water slide, while Roman enjoyed a smaller slide and water spouts.
It was while we were at the water playland that I discovered that Roman had a serious ear infection. A trip to the clinic confirmed that he has Swimmer's Ear. He is now on oral antibiotics and antibiotic ear drops. He loves his oral antibiotic and tolerates the ear drops pretty well. Unfortunately, no swimming for him for 7 days.
Another highlight of the trip was getting to visit with our cousins Dawn, Stacy, and their children. Ava was so excited to see the kids. Roman got attached to Stacy, which is weird since nobody else can stand her :-). The kids spent much of Sunday morning in the pool at the hotel. We were all sad that they had to return to League City so soon.
Both of my kids got to choose new toys while we were in Brownwood, courtesy of Mimi. Ava chose a little horse that she has named Grey Storm. Roman chose 4 little Tonka trucks from the "Chuck's Friends" line. Roman's favorite activity was turning the lights and fans on and off using Grampy's cool remote control. He also enjoyed chasing the cat, Precious. While we were there, Roman started calling the cat "Maow" (rhymes with cow). He is still using that word!

Okay, who knows when I'll post pictures. Here is what I do know:
1. Ava truly loved Science Camp! She is even more excited about Horse Camp in July! She can't stop talking about it.
2. We have been hanging out with my friends Jody, Shelly and Tammy quite a bit the past few weeks. Ava has been having a wonderful time playing with their sons. Roman has had a good time keeping me from truly enjoying my time with my friends. Can't wait until he is old enough to play with the big kids!
3. Swimming is one of Ava's favorite activities. Somewhat surprisingly, Roman loves it, too! He likes to "jump" off the side of the pool.
4. We've had several fun visits from various family members. It has been so good to spend time with Mimi and Grampy (Judy & Curt), Gramps (Ted), and Uncle Jared & Aunt Kristin.
5. Roman's words:
"duck" = truck
"hi"
"whee!"
"do" = shoe
"aye" = bye
"sss" = shhh (usually followed by him putting his finger to his lips, then mine.)
"Ma!" = Mama
"Mom"
"Ooo Ooo!" = dog (kinda like a monkey sound)
"Buh" = ball (that's a new one, so we'll see if it lasts)
"Eeeeh" = horse
"Row, row, row" in response to somebody saying "boat"
He has said other words in the past, but doesn't consistently use them. In fact, he often will say something once or twice, then never utter the word again. I think that having a doting mother and sister has left Roman little incentive to use words, as we work very hard to meet his every need based on his little grunts and whines.
I think it would be so great if I could keep drawing my teacher's salary, but never have to go back to work. That would be the life!
You know what is weird, though? I still can't keep the house clean! I'm home all day, but the mess just keeps on coming. I think it is related to the little darlings that live in my house, especially the little baby. I never knew that boys were so much trouble! Ava spoiled me!
Right now, Roman is working to get a giant mop bucket into a small tent I erected in the entryway. Earlier he tried to get Ava's scooter in, then out, of the tent. It is just laying discarded on its side, half in and half out. That boy is always busy! Ava is watching a Batman cartoon on tv. She is tuckered out after her exciting playdate at Shelly's house today!

I feel like I'm coming out of a fog or something. April and May were very busy, hectic months. They are finally over, and I hope to update this blog with photos very soon!
First, I have to get my house organized a bit, including the garage. Yikes!
What's up with my kids?
1. Roman loves to play the "fall down game" on the bed. He'll stand on the bed or sit on my tummy and "fall" over. He can do this again and again. He thinks it is hilarious!
2. Roman also likes to hit people now, especially his daddy. His new greeting for Gianni is usually a punch in the thigh. Sometimes he hits out of anger or frustration, but most of the time he thinks he is being funny. We're working on curbing this behavior, but it is hard not to laugh when he does it!

3. Ava lost both top front teeth and looks very cute!
4. Ava and I went to a roller skating party and now she wants to go back all the time! She is not a natural talent at roller skating, but she is determined.
5. Ava has Science Camp next week, and she is already talking about what they will be doing.
6. We still haven't gotten Roman's curls cut off, but plan to this month. We just never feel like going to the barbershop! We all need haircuts.
That's all I have right now! Gotta go make pancakes for the kiddos.

Roman loves to push things around the house, including the trash can and various floor cleaners. One of his favorite toys is a red mini-Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner, which belonged to Ava first. He also likes this little dustbuster/mini-vacuum cleaner thing I use around the house. If I'm cleaning, he'll get his little red vacuum and follow me around. Today while I was vacuuming, I kept seeing the little red vacuum creeping up on me out of the corner of my eye. Wherever I was, Roman was there, "helping." He even helped me on the stairs, which was a little scary. He also loves to sweep with the big dust mop we have. The downside to this is that he usually drops my mini-vac and spills the contents all over the floor. He also likes to empty the dirt receptacle on my big vacuum cleaner. I have to be one step ahead of him, or I'll be cleaning everything up again.
On another note, I planned on getting Roman's hair cut professionally today. However, Gianni had to work and wanted me to wait until tomorrow. Well, you know me. When something is bothering me, I have to do something about it. I watched a video on YouTube, read some articles and decided I was ready to cut his hair myself. We have shears from when I used to cut Ava's bangs. Anyway, Ava and I took him outside and put him in his highchair. I followed the directions from the Internet faithfully, but things didn't turn out so well. It isn't terrible, but his bangs do look like Jim Carrey's in Dumb and Dumber. I didn't cut off his curls. I'm not ready to go there yet! We're taking him in to get it fixed by a professional tomorrow. I wish Gianni's mom, Barbara, lived closer so she could take care of these simple cuts for me. Here's the video. Ava was my videographer, so I had to do some editing later on. That is why it jumps every now and then. I think my problem is that I got the whole haircut done in under 3 minutes! You can see when it starts to go wrong, too.
On another note, I'd like to share some video of Ava reading a bedtime story to Roman. She is so sweet to read to him. I think it is good for both of them -- she gets practice and he gets extra attention from his big sister. In the videos below, Roman was totally distracted by the camera. He's still cute, and Ava is so sweet and earnest in her reading to him.

After being awakend at 5:00 a.m. by Roman's crying, I went to him. I changed his diaper and we spent some time playing and listening to music. Music still calms him. I put him back to bed and was back in my own bed within an hour.
Flash foward to 9:30ish. Ava wakes me up to inform me that Roman is crying. I had heard him, but he wasn't too upset, so I was trying to get a little more shut-eye. Anyway, Ava continued to tell me that he was crying the whole time she was cleaning the bathroom. In my sleep fog, I had to ask her to repeat that last sentence. SHE CLEANED THE BATHROOM?! Yep, on her own, Ava straightened up her bathroom -- got all of the toys out of the tub and stacked them neatly in their container, hung up the rags, put something under the rags to catch the drips, folded and stacked the washcloths that were clean but on the floor. Mind you, these were Roman's toys and Roman's mess. Gianni has given him his bath the last few times, and he doesn't clean up all the toys afterwards. It was driving me crazy, and it must have been bothering Ava, too. Then, she told me that she cleaned the bathroom after she fixed up her bed. Yes, she made her bed, too!
This is a picture the duck she put under the washcloths to catch the drips. The other picture is the container with the washcloths and toys arranged neatly.
Well, I must say that was a proud moment in the life of this recovering neat freak! Ava definitely earned her pancakes today!
In a few hours, we are going to the "Introduce A Girl To Engineering Day" at UT. We are meeting up with a couple of Ava's Daisy friends to do various Engineering-related activities. Of course, Roman has to tag along because Gianni is working. Here's some information:

Tomorrow, we have a birthday party to attend. Busy weekend! It is a good thing I washed all the laundry on Thursday night!
At least I don't have to clean the kids' bathroom...

Roman has been walking more and more since he moved up to his new class in mid-January. Here is some video Ava and I took a couple of weeks ago. The camera shakes because Ava kept leaning on me, I guess so she could see the camera screen better. You can hear me ask her to stop a few times.

Just a quick Roman tidbit: His favorite book at bedtime is...Pat the Bunny. He really likes to play peek-a-boo with Paul and read Judy's little book. If you are familiar with the book, you know what I'm talking about! I always offer him two books at bedtime, and he always chooses Pat the Bunny when it is one of the choices. A note regarding the pictures below: I could not find a picture of peek-a-boo with Paul online, and our book is in the sleeping baby's room.

Roman moved up to the next level of day care this week. He now sleeps on the floor on a mat and eats from the table while sitting in a chair. He is also beginning to walk more. My little guy is growing up! He comes home exhausted in spite of taking nearly 3 hour naps. The teachers tell me that he is very "chill." I'm really glad to hear that, and I hope that this behavior continues. Of course, I don't want him to be as chill as Uncle Jared and his daddy sometimes are!
